The Secret Number

Tomlin, a psychiatrist working at a mental hospital, has a disturbing session with one of his patients, a brilliant mathematician named Ersheim. Driven by a singular obsession, Ersheim seeks to prove the existence of “bleem” – a secret integer between three and four. Initially skeptical, Tomlin is unsettled by the idea. Over the course of 24 hours, the idea nags at him, causing him to question his preconceived notions of logic and reality.

Starring Daniel Jones and Tom Nowicki, The Secret Number is a dark mystery thriller adaption of the homonymous short story written by Igor Teper. The new project by Sintel director Colin Levy is currently in post-production and set for a Q4/2011 release.

Alf Prøysens Barnesanger

In collaboration with Norway’s largest public TV broadcaster NRK, Larvik-based design and animation house Sandnes Media has produced a series of animated shorts based on works by the famous and influential Norwegian songwriter and musician Alf Prøysen. The narrative for each short is provided by the lyrics of one of the children’s songs that Prøysen wrote and performed during his main period of work in the 1950s and 60s.

As the project’s sound designer and audio post production engineer, I’ve been responsible for the creation and mixing of a cohesive and believable soundtrack for each short.

Directed by Wolfgang Danner, this 50-minute documentary provides vivid and authentic insights into the street life in urban Thailand and the vast majesty of the tropical mountain landscapes. The score that I’ve written blends traditional elements of Indonesian gamelan music with more modern, upbeat styles.

The production was released in January 2011 on a two-DVD set, which includes lots of bonus material. It can be purchased worldwide at Touratech retail stores or from their Webshop.

Sintel

Sintel is an epic tale about a solitary young girl who finds an unlikely companion in the streets of her inhospitable hometown Ishtar. When the friends are ruthlessly torn apart, she embarks on a desperate journey during which she has to face not only deadly perils, but also come to terms with her real vulnerabilities.

The CG short film is the third “open movie” produced by Ton Roosendaal‘s Amsterdam-based media production venture, the Blender Institute. Directed by Colin Levy, it premiered on September 27th, 2010 at Netherlands Film Festival. A few days later it was released for free online and quickly gathered a lot of public attention. To this date, more than a million people have watched it on YouTube (named a “must-see in HD” and featured on the front page by the YouTube staff); it has been featured prominently on sites such as Slashdot, Cartoon Brew, and Reddit.

Just like with its spiritual predecessors Elephants Dream and Big Buck Bunny, I’ve written and produced the musical score for the film and was responsible of the sound design, foley and 5.1 mixing. For the ending and credits roll of the movie, I wrote a song based on the movie’s main theme, which was performed by jazz/pop singer Helena Fix. At the International Film Music Festival 2011 in Úbeda, Spain, my score for Sintel has won two Jerry Goldsmith Awards in the categories of Best Score for an Animated Short Film and Best Song.
